a nose for business
He demonstrated a nose for business at a young age – long before becoming one of the richest men in the world. When he was still in school, Buffett would buy chewing gum and colas from his grandfather’s shop and sell them in his neighborhood for a profit. He bought his first stock at the age of 11. As a teenager, he, along with a friend, invested in pinball machines they stationed in barber shops, splitting the profits with the shop owners. By 15, he had purchased 40 acres of farmland in Nebraska, USA, using the proceeds from these business ventures.
driving his own way
Buffett describes his philosophy as following his “inner scorecard”, which involves living life on your own terms and not worrying about what others think. He says he is a Democrat, but over the years he has voted and donated to both Democrats and Republicans. He is not religious, describes himself as an agnostic.
sharing and caring
Along with Bill and Melinda French Gates, Buffett created ‘The Giving Pledge’, through which billionaires commit to donate at least half of their wealth to charity. But he goes even further: “More than 99 percent of my wealth will go to charity during my lifetime or at the time of my death,” he pledged.
