The Passport project is a rare example of public-private collaboration in which both sides have won and the lives of citizens have become easier. TCS recently won re-bids for the project for another eight years, here’s a look at how it overcame major challenges to bring efficiency and transparency to the process, and the lessons for similar big initiatives by the government.

In 2008, Devang Choksi’s daughter got a chance to visit America. No one in the Choksi family had left the country before and a mad scramble to get an instant passport ensued. Someone knew someone who knew someone at the passport office in Mumbai and was willing to help. But this process took too long and the opportunity disappeared. Choksi (name changed) is determined not to let this happen again and decides that the entire family will apply.
