India Talking to various countries to make RuPay acceptable in their countries, union finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday.

“Not only this, is i (Unified Payments Interface), BHIM App, and NCPI (The) National Payments Corporation of India) Now all are operating in such a way that systems in their own countries, however robust or otherwise, can talk to our systems and inter-operability will only give strength to the expertise of Indians in those countries.”

“We are working closely with many countries,” Sitharaman Said in response to a question from an Indian student at the University of Maryland, who wanted to have UPI in the United States as well.

Sitharaman made the remarks during a fireside chat with eminent economist Ishwar Prasad at the prestigious Brookings Institute think-tank.

“I am a student here at the University of Maryland. I am really proud of our UPI system in India. I just wanted to ask what are the future plans for the UPI system and how can we share it with the world? Specifically In the US, what I miss the most is India not having a UPI system in the US,” asked the Indian student.

“We are talking to different countries. Singapore and UAE have all come forward to make RuPay acceptable in their respective countries,” Sitharaman said.
