Base Virtual ID is a 16-digit, temporary random number associated with aadhar number, Every time authentication or e-KYC services are used, Feather can be substituted for Base number. VID can be used for authentication similar to Aadhaar number. Aadhaar number cannot be extracted from VID.

Steps to Generate Your Aadhaar Virtual ID

Step 1: Visit UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in/

Step 2: Under “Aadhaar Services”, select “Virtual ID (VID) Generator”

From the website dashboard, you can also select “VID Generator”, as shown below.

Step 3: Select ‘Generate VID’.

Step 4: Enter Aadhar Number and Captcha Code

Step 5: Click on ‘Send OTP’.

A “Virtual (VID) is sent to your registered phone number” message will be generated and delivered to you by UIDAI after OTP verification.

Frequently asked questions as per UIDAI

1. How does a resident obtain VID?

VID can be generated only by the Aadhaar number holder. They can also change (create a new VID) their VID from time to time after the minimum validity period prescribed by UIDAI (currently set as 1 calendar day, i.e. next day 00 A new VID can be generated after 0:00 hrs).

Only one VID will be valid for Aadhaar number at any point of time. UIDAI will provide various options to Aadhaar number holders to generate their VID, retrieve their VID in case of forgetting and replace their VID with a new number.

These options will be made available through UIDAI’s Resident Portal, e-Aadhaar download, Aadhaar Enrollment Centre, mAadhaar mobile application etc. At present the facility of VID generation is available on the Resident Portal of UIDAI. As and when required, the VID will be sent to the residents through SMS on the registered mobile number.

2. Will the VID be regenerated to create the same VID or a different VID?

After the minimum validity period (currently set as 1 calendar day), a new VID will be generated on the Aadhaar number holder’s request for regeneration, and the previous VID will become inactive. If the resident opts for retrieval of VID, the last active VID will be sent to the Aadhaar number holder.

3. Can an agency store VID?

No, since the VID is temporary and can be changed by the Aadhaar number holder, there is no value in storing the VID. Agencies should not store the VID in any database or log.

4. What if an Aadhaar number holder forgets the VID? Can she retrieve it?

Yes, UIDAI will provide multiple ways to retrieve the new and/or current VID. These options will be made available through the resident portal of UIDAI, e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar Enrollment Centre, mAadhaar mobile application etc. At present, the facility of VID generation is available on the resident portal of UIDAI.
