According to the Income Tax website, “Forget password service is available for all registered users on the e-filing portal. With this service you can enter e-filing portal password in e-filing OTP/ Aadhaar OTP / Bank Account EVC / Demat Account EVC / Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) / Net Banking.
Here is the step-by-step guide to reset using e-filing profile password Base OTP (Note that PAN-Aadhaar must be linked)
Step 1: Go to the e-filing homepage and click on Login
Step 2: Enter your User ID and click on Continue.
Step 3: Secure access message, select Password option and click on ‘Forgot Password’.
Step 4: Now, enter your User ID and click on ‘Continue’.
Step 5: On reset password page select option and select OTP on mobile number. Register with Aadhaar and click on Continue.

Step 6: In the next page, select ‘Generate OTP’ and click on continue.
If you already have Aadhaar OTP, then select I already have OTP on mobile number. Enter the 6 digit OTP you already have registered with Aadhaar.
Step 7: Select the declaration checkbox and click on ‘Generate Aadhaar OTP’ on the ‘Verify Your Identity’ screen.

Step 8: Enter the 6 digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar and click on Verify.
Comment:
- OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
- You have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
- The on-screen OTP expiry countdown timer tells you when the OTP will expire.
- On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.
Step 9: Enter the new password in the ‘Set new password and confirm password’ textbox and click on submit.

A success message and a transaction ID are displayed. Please keep the transaction ID on file for future reference.
