We are living in a time of extraordinary change. This is also a unique time to be an entrepreneur. The strongest startups and founders we’ve worked with at Y Combinator are agile, whatever their size, and have responded to challenges as opportunities to think differently about their businesses. I am excited to see how the nominated companies have adapted and even flourished despite facing global issues over the past two years. In the early stages, I watch the team closely. Do they move fast and execute well? Do they have a clear vision and can they inspire people to work with them to make it happen? Do they have a good understanding of who their customers are and is there evidence that they are making the right thing to meet their needs? When selecting winners, in addition to looking closely at the team, I’d look for evidence that they’re solving a big problem and that they’re looking at it in a new way.

ETtechThe two things I am looking for in a startup are flexibility and stability of the business model. When this funding cycle ends, how well can they survive? This is a question on which I will base my decision; Personally I think this is an overheated market and hence these points get even more importance. Another thing is the effect of thought. How many lives are changing and what problems are they solving. Also, the founders and their background are most important to me. Success is more likely when founders do something around their passion and core competencies, so that’s what I see the most.

While some of these metrics may not be relevant to young startups – such as those in the Best in Campus category – for whom the potential for ideas is a better market. But for a startup that has been around for 3-4 years, the flexibility and sustainability factors are important.
