A report by LocalCircle shows that more than 50% of the people who have filed Income Tax Return (ITR) by July 31 for the financial year 2021–2022 have not done so yet.
According to the report, “So far 54 per cent of the respondents have not adhered to the requirement of filing tax returns by the end of this month, of whom 37 per cent are unsure whether they will be able to meet the deadline. Local circle of taxpayers at the time of the survey.” While filing their returns, only 46 per cent of the taxpayers had filed their returns.
In the last two years, the government increased ITR Filing and other income tax related deadlines due to the covid pandemic and glitches in the newly launched income tax portal. On July 2, 2022, Income Tax Department on its official Twitter handle tweeted about irregular traffic on its e-filing website due to problems being faced by taxpayers. The tweet said: “It is observed that taxpayers are facing problems in accessing the ITD e-filing portal.”

The tweet shows that the new tax portal continues to face technical issues even a year after it was implemented. These include issues where taxpayers are unable to link their accounts or view past ITR data, etc. Officials have not yet given any indication that they intend to extend the deadline, as many taxpayers expected.

Over 11,000 responses were received from citizens of 306 districts in India. 69% of the respondents were male while 31% were female. 44% of citizens were from metros or tier 1 districts, 33% from tier 2 districts and 23% from tier 3, 4 and rural districts. The survey was conducted through the LocalCircles platform and all the participants are valid citizens who had to be registered with the LocalCircles to participate in this survey.
